On May 29, 2010 we posted: “Mack Statham's 'Rhapsody On A Motherless Child' in 'Classical Music of African American Composers' June 4, Laurel, MD.” AfriClassical has since received additional program details from pianist Mack Statham. The performance will be by Mack Statham and his son Robert Statham, also a pianist. The concert will be at First United Methodist Church in Laurel, Maryland at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 4, 2010.
Part I of the program will consist of solo piano performances by Robert Statham. He will play Fantasie Nègre of Florence B. Price (1887-1953) and Troubled Water by Margaret A. Bonds (1913-1972).
Part II will be comprised of a 2-piano arrangement of 3 spirituals published in Volumes 1 and 2 by Calvin Taylor.
Part III will feature 2 Etudes by H. Leslie Adams (b. 1932), played in a solo arrangement on 2 pianos. Each pianist will play one hand.
Part IV will be devoted to the premiere of Rhapsody On A Motherless Child. The work is composed by Mack Statham and is based on the traditional spiritual Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child. The music was originally composed for solo piano, but for this concert it has been arranged for performance on two pianos, played by Mack Statham and his son Robert Statham. The performance time is 25-30 minutes. The classical Theme and Variations form is used in the work. [H. Leslie Adams, Margaret A. Bonds and Florence B.
