On June 9, 2010 AfriClassical posted: “Inquiry on Music for Flute and Piano by African American Composers.” We had heard from Rowland Sutherland, whose website is: http://www.rowlandsutherland.com: “I am a flautist, composer, arranger, bandleader and educator of African Caribbean parentage from the island of St Vincent.” “I am writing to see if you might be able to please help me to discover any music by African American composers from the USA who have written music for flute and piano, as I have a recital in October 2010 and I would like to air such work.”
Dr. Timothy W. Holley is a cellist who is Assistant Professor of Music and Director, University Honors Program, at North Carolina Central University. He has also written the liner notes for the CD Songs for The Soul: Chamber Music by African-American Composers, Albany Records Troy 1190 (2010) (70:04)], which AfriClassical recently reviewed. Tracks 1-4 are devoted to Undine Smith Moore's Afro-American Suite for flute, cello & piano (1969). Prof. Holley makes this suggestion to Rowland Sutherland, who lives in the U.K.:
“If you have any cellists on the island (hopefully!!), the Afro-American Suite of Undine Smith Moore (1904-89) is a fine work of chamber music. The score and parts are available through International Opus of Richmond, VA.” TWH
