Armchair Travel 2013

The debut post for BlackPast.org Blog was July 1, 2012. Happy Anniversary! There has been a variety of topics covered, some more popular than others, thoughtful comments, and positive feedback.

Last August, one of the posts (Thinking of Travel: Armchair and Otherwise) explored how to get the most out of travel planning by using fiction to get ideas, learn about a place, or get lost in imagining a vacation in a place and culture whose physical geography may be out of reach. The topic of armchair travel will be revisited in this post by going on a musical excursion. Music of another place, music in a place we know, music of the diaspora. Any of these categories will be an expedition to people and places worth listening to, reading about, or even planning a trip of a lifetime. Clearly, this list will not be all-encompassing and complete. It is meant to start the reader's own journey of research. Please feel free to add lists, ideas, favorite musicians in the comment section.

The 2013 Travel Professionals of Color (TPOC) Conference and Trade Show will be held in Trinidad and Tobago July 28th-August 4th, 2013. The 11th Annual TPOC Conference, taking place at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad is corresponding with the 175th anniversary of Trinidad and Tobago's emancipation from slavery.  Conference participants will get to participate in the island nations' Emancipation Day celebrations. They will also hear top travel industry professionals, and attend informative workshops and panel discussions during the conference.

TPOC is the first industry conference to focus on the needs and education of today’s travel professional of color. The TPOC conferences allow participants to learn how to start and grow a travel agency, network with hundreds of other minority travel professionals, learn how to market to the travel communities and more. Attendees also earn CLIA credits towards accreditation. There is also a Heritage Summit and participants will get to tour the island and visit heritage sites.

TPOC is an organization that promotes training, networking and support of minority travel professionals. TPOC seeks out travel suppliers who have an interest in reaching the multicultural market. The TPOC conference & trade Show was organized in August, 2002 by two African-American travel agents Charlotte Haymore and Betty Jones in Denver, Co. The intent of the company is to sponsor conferences and many other positive programs for the minority travel agents with a focus on profitability and raising an awareness within the travel community regarding professional services provided by capable minority travel agents.

밝다 밝다 눈부시게 밝다                           bright, bright, blindingly bright
꺼질 것 같은데, 같은데... 같은데...          flickering, ready to die
꺼지지 않는 촛불의 생명력                       but enduring persistence
얼른 두 손이 모아지니                                as you gather two hands around
다시 밝아지네                                               It brightens again

좋다 좋다 환하니 좋다                                      good, good, bright is good
나를 태우니 내 주변이 환하구나                   burning the self, brightens the world around
순간 그림자가 너울거리네...너울...너울      the shadow dances
벽에 비친 내 모습 더 크게 보이니                  on the wall magnified
마음에 품은 내 뜻도 크게 비춰 보이네         your desire in heart magnifies too

작은 불씨가 사방으로 이어지니               a small flicker lasts
천지가 환해지고                                           to brighten the whole world
꺼질 것 같은 불씨는 활활 타올라             a small flicker lasts
마음의 등불되어,                                          to become a guiding light
마음의 소망되어,                                          to the hearts that desire
우리들의 염원을 담아 보네                       desire for our freedom
그 소망이 자유라
두 손 모아 감싸 꺼지지 않는 촛불이여                put your hands around the candle
영원히 간직되는 생명의 불씨라                            guard the lasting light of life
밤낮을 가리지 않는 자유의 촛불이 될 지어다  May it be the light of freedom
자유와 평등, 영혼을 불사르는 촛불                     dream of freedom and equality
꿈, 꿈을 이루어내는 큰 그림자 되었네               takes the shadow of self burning sacrifice

밝고, 환한 촛불이여                                                 bright candle light
우리를 밝히는 불씨 되어                                        May it brighten our sprits
영혼을 지피는 꿈의 촛불이 될 지어다.               May it sustain our dream

Still Waters Youth Sinfo-Nia: 2013 Summer Music Camp for Orchestra & Band Students, July 8-19

July 2, 2013

Greetings Family, Friends, Patrons, Supporters, etc.,

I hope that everyone is having an exciting and restful summer.  My youngest daughter, Briana and I traveled to Columbus, OH to conduct the Urban Strings Youth Orchestra’s 2nd annual Summer Camp.  We had a great time.  They will be joining Sinfo-Nia in Nashville, TN July 27th for the National Association of Negro Musicians (NANM).  This trip is open only to the Advanced Orchestra students that take part in our two-week Camp.  Then they are planning to come to Atlanta to join us for our Fall Benefit Concert.  This will be our urban youth orchestra network in action.

Last Tuesday, June 25, 2013 marked the Still Waters Youth Sinfo-Nia’s 23rd Anniversary.  Now we begin year number 24 with our annual two-week Summer Academy will begin on Monday morning, July 8, 2013 at 8:30 PM at First Congregational Church located at 105 Courtland St., ATL 30303.  It runs Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM with the last day (July 19th) ending in our Camp Concert.  We have a number of students who have already paid tuition and registered.  We always get quite a few to register on the first day of Camp.

We are looking forward to two big events that will take place during our Camp:

-          A Workshop by recording artist and 5-time Grammy nominee, Ashanti Floyd, also known as “The Mad Violinist.”  He has been busy recording for some more recording artist (to add to the list of the ones he has already recorded with – he will update us during Camp when he comes).  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NH3NZdxkEsM

-          A television performance, which will be shown all over the world.  We will have more details soon.  We will need the help of parents who can come to our Camp a certain time of day to pick up their children and transport others to the television studio.  That time might be around 3:30 PM or 4:00 PM.

Both opportunities will open up more doors for our students, especially to the recording and music video industry.  As you know, Ashanti’s workshop last summer led to a music video recording this spring.  He is already composing more music, which may involve Sinfo-Nia as well.  He is getting a lot of positive feedback from our “Battle Field” video.  He has over 15,000 views worldwide on YouTube.

We would appreciate your assistance: I am asking for your support for our program this summer in a special, unique way.  For the remainder of the week, please talk to your friends, family members, co-workers, co-worshippers, etc. about Sinfo-Nia’s Summer Academy (Camp).  Some of them may have children who are of school-age (elementary through high school, plus college).  Please make copies of the attached flier and post them up on bulletin boards at work, school, place of worship, community centers, etc., and have some available to pass out.  Our hours fit most of the work schedules of parents where they can drop off their children as early as 7:30 AM and pick them up as late at 6:00 PM.  They may be people you know who are looking for another camp for their children to attend.  Sinfo-Nia is certainly the place for a wonderful, music, and cultural experience.

Sinfo-Nia has a structured program for those students who are (or wish to become) serious musicians.  That does not necessarily mean as college music majors or minors.  Music (especially orchestral music) is a bridge to academic success, which leads to high academic achievement whereas music students are more likely to earn college academic scholarships in addition to music.  Sinfo-Nia’s unique repertoire of music and motivating structured curriculum in a nurturing environment is a great place for students with musical talent.  Of course we offer strings (violin, viola, cello, and double bass) on all three levels of instruction – beginning, intermediate, and advanced.  Right now, for woodwinds, brass, and percussion, we only offer instruction on the advanced level.

We are looking forward to another great summer camp as we keep the tradition of a proud heritage and high musical achievement.  Also, please talk to your friends, relatives, etc. and invite them to our Summer Camp Concert, which will take place on Friday, July 19, 2013 at 6:00 PM.  Tickets will be $15 for adult and $10 for child. And please attend yourself (bring family and friends).  Our hit song in memory of legendary gospel singer, Inez Andrews who passed away recently, “Lord, Don’t Move My Mountain” is a show-stopper.  We have so much exciting music to perform and a short time to learn it.  We will have tickets at the door.  Have a wonderful day.

Sincerely,
David E. Robinson, III

John Malveaux: 8-18-2013 World Premiere honoring Dr. King by South Korean composer Dr. Joopoong Kim

Dr. Joopoong Kim

John Malveaux of www.MusicUNTOLD.com writes:

Dr. Joopoong Kim is a composer and professor at Kyonggi University in Seoul, Korea. Dr. Kim was invited to write music to an appropriate Korean poem for performance during the 50th Anniversary MLK Jr. ‘SYMPHONY of BROTHERHOOD’ Concert on August 18, 2013, Zipper Hall-Colburn School, downtown Los Angeles.
Dr. Kim responded “I have searched for a poem that would be appropriate to the theme of MLK Jr. But, despite an extensive search, I was unable to find a poem that embodied the theme and message that I had envisioned. I chose to write the poem for my piece. The poem is in Korean.  Briefly, the poem introduces a candlelight to symbolize the power of MLK Jr.’s messages. A single candlelight, as it struggles to stay lit, seems weak and transient. It may flicker out at any moment. But, the candlelight has the power to illuminate an area far greater than its immediate surrounding and change from dark to light. MLK Jr.’s messages undoubtedly had the same effect to bring greater social equality in the United States.”

MusicalCriticism.com: 'The best part of the evening was the show-stealing performance of Angel Blue who sang an outstanding Musetta'

Angel Joy Blue in English Northern Opera
production of Puccini's La bohème

Sergio A. Mims writes:

I came across the stellar review of soprano Angel Joy Blue in the English National Opera production of La Boheme back in May:

Check out her website:

Sergio

Puccini: La bohème

English National Opera
Coliseum, London, 7th May 2013
The best part of the evening was the show-stealing performance of Angel Blue who sang an outstanding Musetta: her portrayal breathed modern sass, a fiery energy, and, in Act IV, an extra bit of pathos into the rest of the performance. Her “Quando m’en vo” was both technically proficient and emotionally evocative, though one would have wished for a bit more pianissimo on the final B-flat.
