We have received a correction from Jessica Machado, wife of Celso Machado. She explains that the piece in the YouTube video is called Baião Barroco and is actually a track from the CD Jogo da Vida, CBC Records 3021 (2007). The CD is shown on the Celso Machado page at AfriClassical.com and is discussed in Paragraph 21.

Johann Sebastian Bach goes for a holiday to Cuba (David Virelles' native land), where he meets Glenn Gould and is impressed by his piano playing. They travel to Brazil and collaborate with Celso on a baião, which is a popular rhythm and dance of northeastern Brazil.

Celso Machado is an Afro-Brazilian composer, guitarist, lyricist and singer who was born in Ribeiro Preto, Brazil on January 27, 1953. He has a website of his own, http://www.CelsoMachado.com The works he writes and performs are played by guitarists in both classical and world music genres. At age seven Celso began performing in street bands. He first performed in Canada in 1986; he moved there three years later. Celso's many CDs consist of music composed by himself and others. ST. JOHN'S, N.L. -- The fourth annual Canadian Folk Music Awards were held on the East Coast for the first time last night, but it was Central and Western Canada that walked off with all the honours. The late Oliver Schroer, the Toronto-based fiddler who died of leukemia in July, was the only double winner at the fourth annual awards. Honoured during a special tribute, Schroer won the Instrumental Artist and Pushing the Boundaries awards for his album Hymns and Hers. His sister, Martina Schroer, accepted his awards.

Toronto's Luke Doucet and the White Falcon took the contemporary album award for Blood's Too Rich, while one-time rodeo rider and Taber, Alta., native Corb Lund captured the English songwriter prize for Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier! B.C. winners included Gabriola Island's The Kerplunks for best children's album, Gibsons' Celso Machado (Jogo da Vida) for world solo artist and Qualicum Beach's Emma Beaton, who won the young performer award for her Pretty Fair Maid. Nomination for Canadian Folk Music Awards is Fourth Honor of Year for Celso Machado

On October 9, 2008 AfriClassical posted "Celso Machado's 'Jogo da Vida' Nominated for Canadian Folk Music Awards".  CoastReporter.net has published an overview of the globe-trotting guitarist's career on November 14, 2008: "On top of the world music: Celso Machado" by Jan DeGrass, Arts and Entertainment Writer, Reporter.  The article reports that the nomination of Jogo da Vida is the fourth honor he has received in 2008.

Celso Machado: Afro-Brazilian Classical Guitarist & Composer

Celso Machado is an Afro-Brazilian composer, guitarist, lyricist and singer. He has a new CD, Jogo da Vida. The works Machado writes and performs are played by guitarists in both classical and world music genres. He was born in Ribeiro Preto, Brazil on January 27, 1953. At age seven he began performing in street bands. Machado first performed in Canada in 1986; he moved there in 1989. His many CDs consist of music composed by himself and others. His recordings, compositions and awards are listed at his Web site: www.CelsoMachado.com

Machado has composed sound tracks for several documentary films. His score for the film In the Company of Fear won a Leo Award in 2000 in Canada. Publication of Machado's sheet music has resulted in many performances by other guitarists. The French firm Éditions Henry Lemoine has published a volume of his music, Musiques populaires brésilliennes pour flûte et guitare.

Machado has adopted rhythms and musical instruments from many cultures. He teaches master classes for guitar. Three of his CDs have been nominated for Canadian Juno Awards: Varal, Surucua Art Productions 002 (1997); Jongo Lê, Daqui (1999); and Capivara, Surucua Art Productions (2005).

Classical guitarist Adam Khan includes five works of Celso Machado in his current performance repertoire. The long list of classical guitarists who have recorded Machado's works includes the Canadian Guitar Trio, Gerald Garcia, Zsofia Boros, Walter Stoiber, Winfried Stegmann, David Nutall, Timothy Kain, Neil Anderson, William Buonocore and Pasquale Bianculli.

The online music shop of CBC Records, http://www.cbcshop.ca/, says Machado's newest CD, Jogo da Vida, CBC 3021, represents a substantial departure from his previous recording projects. The CD was released in Canada on July 3, 2007; its U.S. release date is August 28, 2007, according to Naxos, its U.S. Distributor.
