We are pleased to announce that Sonia Sanchez, the Schomburg Society
National Membership Chair, has won the Lifetime Achievement award from
the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards.
The prestigious, long-running award recognizes books that have made
important contributions to our understanding of racism and our
appreciation of human cultures. Sonia Sanchez is a poet, playwright,
educator, and activist who was a leader of the Black Arts Movement. As
the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards noted, she "has spent most of her 84 years calling all types of people toward freedom and dignity with her pen and her voice."
Sonia Sanchez taught for 40 years, breaking new ground across the country by creating pioneering Black studies courses, including a course on Black female writers at the University of Pittsburgh. Through lectures, she has shared her art and her message at over 500 campuses, and she has authored over a dozen poetry books.
As the Schomburg Society National Membership Chair, she is carrying our mission forward and strengthening our home in Harlem.
