November 4, 2018 Inner City Youth Orchestra Los Angeles 2018-19 season
opening concert at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church featured TWO
premieres performances. The first premiere was the collaboration of
ICYOLA and the Music Department of California State University Dominguez
Hill. Students enrolled in orchestra class at CSU-Dominguez Hills are
now members of ICYOLA. The second premiere was the South Central String
Quartet.
The concert opener and closer was standard orchestral repertoire by Haydn and Brahms.
The Los Angeles Orchestra Fellowship is a unique partnership training
program between ICYOLA, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and University of
Southern California Thornton School of Music resulting in the South
Central String Quarter. Andante and Alegretto Furioso from String Quartet No. 10 by Dmitri Shostakovich
was an excellent choice to premiere the skillful South Central String
Quartet. However, the name South Central String Quartet seems a far
reaching stretch considering the players are from Mexico, Houston,
Brazil, and Boston.
The capturing South Central String Quartet performance was followed by Invierno Porteno (Winter in Buenos Aires) by composer Astor Piazzolla
featuring virtuoso violinist Sydney Adedamola who is a member of the
South Central String Quartet (Los Angeles Orchestra Fellowship).
