The Colour of Music Festival returns for its fifth year to various local venues Wed. Oct 18 through Sun. Oct. 22.

Featuring black classical composers and performers from around the world, the festival showcases the works of musicians whose names have been historically overlooked in the United States.

Some of this year’s highlights include a tribute to opera soprano Leontyne Price, a performance from German Maestro Kazem Abdullah leading the Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Orchestra, a Matinee Memorial performance honoring the Emanuel Nine, and a debut of a piece in memory of those who lost their lives during the Middle Passage, when millions of Africans were shipped to the New World as part of the Atlantic slave trade.

The event will take place at a number of venues around Charleston including the Gaillard Center, Memminger Auditorium, St. Philip’s Church, and the Murray Center Salon.

Tickets are $11-$72. For more information, go to colourofmusic.org.
