CAAPA MasterClass
Series®…a first in the
USA
African
American arts organization honors the legacy of Black Classical Musicians with
a national MasterClass Series® featuring African American
MusicMasters® to serve performing
arts institutions, Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU’s),
high schools, and more.
The Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts (CAAPA) taps
into renowned African American MusicMasters®, to
conduct MasterClasses® at Historically Black College &
Universities (HBCU’s), performing arts high schools, and other venues, at no
cost to the presenters, students, or attendees. The goal is to encourage African Americans and
others to pursue classical music and the performing arts as a possible career,
inspire attendees to embrace the art form as a viable option, and to engage
students into honing their musical craft through expert advice. The program, coordinated by Angela Renee Simpson, a renowned opera
soprano in her own right. She launched the series during Black History Month three
years ago and has featured renowned MusicMasters at schools including Morehouse
College, Spelman College, Howard University, Morgan State University,
Livingstone College, Jackson State, Winston-Salem State University, and
others.
The upcoming
session is being conducted by MusicMaster® and tenor Issachah
Savage is being held at Nyack College
on Monday, April 24, 2017 at 4:00 – 6:00 pm in the Music Hall (Room #2241), New
York, New York. Savage, who also sits on the CAAPA Board of Directors has performed in
major opera roles throughout the world and is excited about helping to “bring color to the classics”, which is
also CAAPA’s slogan.
The CAAPA national MasterClass Series® initiative is the first time an African
American arts organization has ever offered a program specifically targeting
the black student audience. Contact Simpson at dramasop@hotmail.com,
or the CAAPA office at 301-839-1444 for information regarding
sponsorship, hosting a MasterClass® or to serve as a MusicMaster®.
