I am very excited to share with you a groundbreaking new Brennan Center report, How Many Americans Are Unnecessarily Incarcerated?, released in a New York Times exclusive today.
A
first-of-its kind analysis, this study finds that nearly 40 percent of
the U.S. prison population is kept behind bars with no compelling public
safety reason and at a cost of nearly $20 billion annually. Based on
three years of original research, the report recommends a new sentencing
framework. One that would prioritize public safety, drastically
decrease the prison population, reduce unjust disparities and, if fully
implemented, save the country nearly $200 billion over ten years.

shares the personal stories of those unnecessarily incarcerated and
powerfully illustrates the potential impact of applying our specific
recommendations.
