off a fantastic new season featuring the
artistic genius of some of the country’s
greatest Black composers. Using subject
matter relative to the Black experience,
Trilogy presents thought provoking
operatic works designed to examine,
challenge, celebrate and inspire the
community.

Trilogy’s summer season opens on
Thursday, July 16, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at
Weequahic Park (Elizabeth Ave. &
Grumman Ave.) in Newark, NJ with
Malcolm X: A Commentary. A
conceptual concert done in speech,
song, film, and slides. This concert will
present important music from leading
composers Anthony Davis, Margaret
Bonds, David Baker and others, as well
as the spellbinding words of Malcolm X.
Free admission.

at Aljira, a center for contemporary art
(591 Broad St., Newark, NJ) Trilogy
will present the world premiere of
“Homage to a King” composed by
Trilogy’s resident conductor, Julius
Williams. This newly commissioned
piece brilliantly explores Martin Luther
King Jr.’s speech, “Beyond Vietnam: A
Time To Break Silence”. The speech,
delivered by Dr. King one year to the
day prior to his assassination, has been
called his most controversial and
important speech. Maestro Julius
Williams has set moments of the
Riverside Church speech to music, to
be sung by American bass Kevin
Maynor accompanied by two French
horns and two trombones. Tickets $20.

on the infamous Central Park Five case,
the piece examines themes of injustice
and triumph over adversity through an
operatic lens. The performance will take
place at Central Theater (246 18th
Avenue, Newark, NJ) on Saturday,
August 1, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. Admission
is free and open to the public.
