MUIN242 is pleased to announce the recent
release of their first compact disc entitled
Melodic Conch Salad.
Melodic Conch Salad is a reflection of
MUIN242’s commitment to the preservation
and promotion of music from The Bahamas.
The ensemble MUIN242 is a diverse group of
young musicians who share a love for
Bahamian culture. The group’s actual name
is taken from COB curriculum (MUIN) and
the Nassau area code (242). Members first
came together in 2013 as part of COB's
music group performance class, led by Dr.
Christine Gangelhoff. For a group p
erformance, they selected the repertoire,
created the arrangements, and rehearsed
the program, but ultimately decided that
one performance was not a sufficient
showcase for the music. This led to the idea
of recording an album. Melodic
MUIN242 hopes to raise awareness of and
to promote Bahamian music, and to
encourage younger Bahamians to appreciate
the beauty and complexity of this art form.
Included on the disc are works by Blind Blake,
Tony Mackay, E. Clement Bethel, Christian
Justilien, and an original composition by band
member Mathew Rolle II. The body of works
on this recording exemplifies the commitment
to research Bahamian musical history, and
the enthusiasm of students and faculty to
preserve these rich musical traditions.
Melodic Conch Salad was recorded in June
2014 in Tower Heights Studio, Nassau, The
Bahamas. The material was developed in The
College of The Bahamas course MUIN255, led
by Christine Gangelhoff, executive producer of
the recording, and was produced, engineered,
and mastered by Terry Manning. COB lecturers
Christine Gangelhoff and Christian Justilien were
Musical Directors.
Melodic Conch Salad is available on iTunes and
all digital music stores. More information on
MUIN242 and Melodic Conch Salad can be found
on their Facebook page:
MUIN242 ensemble members Leslie Forbes,
Elvin Hanna, Gillard Louis, Matthew Rolle II, and
Lynden Sands are students at The College of The
Bahamas.
