*As we previously reported, legendary musician/pianist Joe Sample died last Friday in Houston at age 75. The cause of death was revealed as lung cancer.
Now we have news of his wake and viewing. See the info below

Friday, September 19th
There will be a wake and viewing open to the general public.
Location: Our Mother of Mercy Church
4000 Sumpter St., Houston TX, 77020
Time: 6:00 – 9:00pm
Funeral services on Saturday will be private for family and friends.

My
first meeting with Joe Sample came in the early seventies when I promoted a concert for the Black Student Union at California State
University-Long Beach featuring South African vocalist Letta Mbula with a
pick up four or five piece band. At the pre-concert sound check, we
discovered the sheet music was inadvertently left behind. The piano
player solved the problem when he voluntarily wrote parts for each of
the other players from memory. I was amazed and saved from disaster.
Some time thereafter, i learned that the pick-up piano player was Joe
Sample. RIP
