Dominique-René de Lerma
The history and achievements by people of African descent
in classical music has been minimized and neglected in educational
curriculum, media, and classical music institutions with few exceptions.
Nevertheless, through the lifetime and tireless commitment of writers
such as JA Rogers, James Monroe Trotter, Eileen Southern, Raoul Abdul, Dominique-René de Lerma,
and numerous others, this remarkable history is available for any to
learn with detailed documentation. As MusicUNTOLD seek to heighten
awareness of achievements by composer, pianist, and educator George Walker in support
of National Association of Negro Musicians and NAACP recognition, i am
reminded of the critical importance of research and documentation. Of
the mentioned writers/authors/scholars that i met through the library
many years ago, all of them are now deceased except Dominique-René de Lerma who
remain available as a giant resource for specific information not only
about people of African descent but the entire genre of classical music
and connecting jazz. We, the public, have the immediatee benefit of his
research along with future generation. MusicUNTOLD thank and acknowledge

goodness! John, this is a very kind gift for my 85th birthday and,
while we all certainly must appreciate peer recognition more for our
efforts than for ourselves, I must confess your generosity nonetheless
spurs me on. Yet we cannot lose the perspective nor ignore the

What a wonderful, wonderful tribute,
and one which is very well deserved! I am so proud of you, and so
grateful your friendship, your knowledge, and your very important body
of work. I can't wait to share this with our friends at Spark Media, and
with Josh.
I promote a lot of concerts in the DC area. One of
my good friends, a wonderful Russian violinist, has a chamber ensemble
and presents a season of concerts every year. I just spoke with him two
days ago. He is developing his season for next year and shared with me
that he is strongly considering a concert devoted to African American
composers, and that he wanted to include and feature music by George
Walker. He is working on concept right now, with repertoire to follow,
but I told him that if he needs and cannot find information on composers
or rep, or if he needs a suggestion for either, that he could not
possibly find anybody more knowledgeable than you!
