Listen, Summer 2013
The Canadian pianist, whom Jed Distler cited in Gramophone as having a "stylish, vitally communicative way with Beethoven," has decided to fulfill what he calls a lifelong obsession by staging in three cities eleven-hour performances of Beethoven's thirty-two piano sonatas. The concerts - which will take place in Princeton, NJ (June 22); Dallas, TX (September 8); and Davis, CA (October 6 - will each present the sonatas in three sets, in they order they were composed.
"When I was three years old, that was the first time that I heard the Beethoven piano sonata cycle in its entirety," says the thirty-five-year-old Goodyear. "That was the only way I listened to it. I always felt it was a complete mammoth song cycle, if you will, with each sonata being one of the thirty-two characters that make up the retrospective of Beethoven's arc."
Goodyear has been training for the challenge. Last June he presented the cycle in one day at the Luminato Fetival in Toronto. That performance began at ten o'clock in the morning and endedaround 11:30 p.m., with breaks for lunch and dinner. Remarkably, almost seventy percent of ticket buyers paid for all three segments. A recording of the complete cycle for Marquis Classics followed.

Known for his athletic regimen, the pianist puts in long hours of cardiovascular exercise and strength training at the gym. He also avoids empty calories, eating little bread and lots of vegetables, salads, protein and multivitamins.
