The Still Waters Youth Sinfo-Nia and Dance Company is a nonprofit orchestra and dance company comprised of young African American musicians and dancers in the Metropolitan Atlanta Area, http://www.sinfo-nia.com/ The orchestra's repertoire features works of composers and arrangers of African descent, such as William Grant Still, who is profiled at AfriClassical.com:
“The Still Waters Youth Sinfo-Nia of Metropolitan Atlanta, Inc. was formed and founded as the William Grant Still Memorial Youth Orchestra of Metropolitan Atlanta on June 25, 1990. The Orchestra was named after the Dean of Black Composers, William Grant Still (1895-1978). The Orchestra is designed to showcase the works of black composers and arrangers.”
For legal reasons, the Orchestra found it necessary to change its name in 1998.
“The Orchestra still pays tribute to William Grant Still by keeping the "Still" name as a part of the Orchestra's new name. Other black composers are honored as well.”
The Still Waters Youth Sinfo-Nia and Dance Company will tour Ghana, Togo, and Benin from December 22, 2007 – January 4, 2008.
The staff members of the Dance Company are Alycia W. Robinson, Director; Candace Woodall, Choreographer; and Dynecia Cowan-Johnson, Choreographer. The Advanced Orchestra is directed by David E. Robinson, III, Conductor. The Beginners/Junior Orchestra is led by Freda Walker, Conductor, Strings; and Lester Pleasant, Conductor, Woodwinds.
“The Still Waters Youth Sinfo-Nia is accepting more new and returning students for membership during the School-Year 2007-08. Classes are held on Saturday mornings, 9:00 AM to 12 Noon at Providence Missionary Baptist Church (located at 2295 Benjamin E. Mays Dr. SW). Sinfo-Nia is also planning a trip to South Africa for June 2009. The Orchestra will be doing more performances out of town.
