“Sphinx Virtuosi, a nationally acclaimed orchestra featuring black and Latino musicians, will launch its 2011 national tour with performances Monday and Tuesday at The Grand Opera House. Founded in 1996, the group’s vision is 'a world in which classical music reflects cultural diversity and plays a role in the everyday lives of youth.'

“For the performance in Macon, talented young Sphinx Laureates Randall Goosby and Gabriel Cabezas, who won the national Sphinx Competition for young black and Latino string players, are featured. The performance includes classic works by Bartok, Bach and Schubert, as well as pieces by Alberto Ginastera, Alberto Golijov, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, Juan Bautista Plaza and others.”

"As part of the Grand’s GrandKids Arts Education Series for elementary, middle and high school students, Sphinx will perform a one-hour concert twice daily, at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Monday and Tuesday. Tickets are $7. There also will be a longer evening concert Monday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for students, $15 for adults. “The emerging new face of classical music was on display Tuesday evening when gifted 14-year-old violinist Randall Goosby, one of the talented young laureates of the Sphinx Organization, performed at the Bloomberg Tower in Midtown. The riveting performance served as a prelude for the Organization’s upcoming annual showcase of Virtuosi of Color at Carnegie Hall on October 12. The high-profile event will be hosted by Vanessa Williams and serve as a celebration of Sphinx’s incredibly successful 15-year-track record of engaging and providing opportunities in the world of classical music for young and talented kids in the Black and Latin-American communities.

“The organization was founded in 1996 by Aaron Dworkin, an African-American violinist, in an effort to overcome the cultural stereotype of classical music in minority communities, and encourage minority participation and enjoyment of it.” “Mr. Dworkin, who was recently nominated to be a member of the President’s National Council on the Arts, is himself a virtuoso violinist who was motivated to found the organization based on his own difficulties finding entrance and acceptance in the world of classical music.

“Sure I felt resistance, he said, “I was aware that I was the only person who looked like me in my immediate experience. But I had a great mentor (Vladimir Graffman). I studied at Peabody (MA) Prep. I wanted other kids of color to have similar opportunities.” So he did something about it…when he was still a kid.” “A decade-and-a-half later, Sphinx is a testimony to his commitment to opening doors to kids of color to classical music…not only as performers, but as fans. The South Bend Symphony Orchestra ends the City of South Bend’s Martin Luther King Day Celebration with a concert honoring Dr. King on Monday, January 17, 2011 at the IU South Bend, Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts in North Side Hall Auditorium. The 7:00 p.m. concert features South Bend Symphonic Choir, IU South Bend Chorale and the IU South Bend Gospel Choir, under the direction of Dr. Marvin Curtis along with the South Bend Symphony Youth Orchestra and Mr. David Buggs. They will join Maestro Tsung Yeh and the South Bend Symphony Orchestra for an evening of inspirational music, from Schwantner to Uzee Brown. Special Guest Artist is Randall Goosby, violin, winner of the Junior Division of the Sphinx Competition. Concert goers can obtain the free tickets needed for admission by calling the South Bend Symphony office at 574.232.6343.
