The
Virginia State University Concert Choir will make its annual appearance
at the Slave Commemoration and Wreath
Laying Ceremony at Mount Vernon in Mount Vernon, VA, the historic home
of George Washington on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. both
live and virtually.
The Virginia State University Concert Choir will begin its 2021-22 post-pandemic performance season with its annual performance at the historic Slave Commemoration and Wreath Laying Ceremony at Mount Vernon, the historic home of George Washington on Saturday, October 9 at 11:00 a.m. Previously conducted by Johnnella Lucas Edmonds who recently retired from the Virginia State University Department of Music with 50 years of dedicated service, the choir is now being led by her former student and newly hired Instructor of Voice and Interim Director of Choral Activities Patrick D. McCoy, a 2000 VSU Music Alumnus and Petersburg native. Among his long list of accolades, he is a graduate of Shenandoah Conservatory of Shenandoah University, a member of the Music Critics Association of North America and a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. McCoy serves as Organist and Choirmaster at historic Saint John's Episcopal Church in Beltsville, MD.
The program is a collaboration between Mount Vernon and the Black Women United for Action in remembering the slaves
who lived at Mount Vernon with a special program and wreath laying ceremony at the Slave Memorial.
First conducting the choir at this program in 2017 as an adjunct
instructor of music, McCoy returned to the university in full-time
status and has been rehearsing the University Concert Choir since
August.
