It is with great sadness that I share the passing of soprano Carmen
Balthrop. This is the statement from the University of MD, College

"The University of Maryland and
the School of Music mourn the loss of our beloved voice and opera
professor, Carmen Balthrop, who passed away September 5 following a
year-long battle with cancer. Although Carmen’s illustrious career path
led her to many of the great opera houses and concert stages throughout
the world, it was her love, devotion and passion for teaching that
always took center stage. Those who worked with her, studied with her or
were simply graced by her presence know the huge void that has befallen
