George Walker (1922-2018)

ELGIN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (Elgin, IL) has invited MICKEY THOMAS TERRY to
present a Zoom/Facebook Live virtual lecture on the music of George
Walker on August 24th at 7:00 pm CST. It will be a pre-concert lecture
that precedes the evening concert which will feature a work by Walker.
George Walker (1922-2018) was the first Black ever to be awarded the
Pulitzer Prize for Music. Terry enjoyed a 25 year friendship with the
composer. Walker composed and dedicated an organ work entitled "Spires,"
which was commissioned by the American Guild of Organists. Terry
premiered this work at the 1998 American Guild of Organists National
Convention in Denver where the composer was present. Terry's interview
with Walker is published in "The Musical Quarterly" (Oxford University
Press).
