Be a part of one of Detroit’s most diverse classical performances, the 23rd annual Sphinx Competition Finals Concert, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center. Eighteen musicians from around the country will come to Detroit to compete in the Sphinx Competition for young black and Latinx string players. At the Finals Concert, the three finalists compete for the $50,000 Robert Frederick Smith Prize and solo appearances with major orchestras. Audiences will experience the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra, led by guest conductor Roderick Cox, and Sphinx founder Aaron Dworkin’s new spoken word multimedia work, The American Rhapsody. The Sphinx Organization will also host SphinxConnect, a global convening known as the epicenter for artists and leaders in diversity, Feb. 6-8 at The Westin Book Cadillac Detroit hotel.
