Sergio Mims: Tribute to Jessye Norman on WHPK-FM Tue. Oct. 22 & Nov. 12

Jessye Norman

Sergio A. Mims writes:

I wanted you and your readers to know that I will be celebrating the career and legacy of the legendary soprano and humanitarian Jessye Norman, who passed away on September 30,  on my classical music radio on Tuesday Oct 22. and Nov. 12

On the Oct. 22 the entire program devoted to a recording of one of her earliest recording triumphs with the Carl Maria Von Weber opera Euryanthe with Marek Janowski conducting the Staatskapelle Berlin

Then on Nov. 12 I will broadcast what is considered one of her greatest achievements in the Richard Strauss' opera Ariadne auf Naxos conducted by Kurt Masur with the Gewandhausorchester.  The New York Times said of her singing in the recording that:

"Ms. Norman’s queenly quality, her larger-than-lifeness, suited her for myth...But since there wasn’t anything ethereal about her full-bodied (though luminous and levitating) sound, the effect was that of both mortal and deity, an earth goddess. She can be intimate here, telling a story across a campfire, and then suddenly she’s unfurling across the millenniums".

The show can be heard on WHPK-FM in Chicago locally on 88.5FM and worldwide livestream on whpk.org every Tuesday from 12-3PM U.S. Central Time)
