Classical Music: Justice and Peace at Carnegie

For more than two decades, the Sphinx Organization
has advocated for the work of underrepresented musicians of color. And
its touring string ensemble, the Sphinx Virtuosi, continues to bring
necessary diversity to major concert halls.
On
Friday, the Virtuosi perform at Carnegie Hall, with a program that
highlights the work of four black composers: Michael Abels, Philip
Herbert, Xavier Foley and Damien Sneed. Tied to the “400 Years of Inequality”
nationwide initiative — which raises awareness about the arrival of the
first enslaved Africans to Virginia in 1619 — the concert includes a
new work by Foley titled “For Justice and Peace” as well as the world
premiere of a vocal suite by Sneed that explores the legacy of slavery
in the Americas.
