Statement on the Passing of Congressman Elijah Cummings

[Alexandria, VA] Cerelyn J. Davis, President of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), issued today the following statement regarding the passing of Rep. Elijah Cummings:

"Today, NOBLE was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Elijah Cummings, one of our nation's greatest and most fearless civil rights champions. Rep. Cummings spent his entire career fighting to advance and protect the rights of Black people and lower-income communities not only in his hometown of Baltimore, but also across the country."

"In 2015, following the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray while in police custody, Rep. Cummings played a critical role in calming tensions between law enforcement and the residents of Baltimore. It goes without saying that he was a trusted member of his community and beacon of hope for all the constituents he served."

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time. Moving forward, we will honor Rep. Cummings' legacy by serving as a bridge to the communities to which he was so committed and as the conscience of law enforcement. We will also continue to work tirelessly to improve police-community relations."
