John Malveaux: Julia Bullock & Davone Tines not in Met production of Blanchard opera

Terence Blanchard

Kasi Lemmons

This is a correction of multiple blogs reporting Davone Tines and Julia Bullock to sing leading roles in the forthcoming Metropolitan Opera "Fire Shut Up In My Bones".  Although both sang in the Opera Theatre St. Louis premiere production under director James Robinson who is currently directing the new production of Porgy & Bess at the Met with an all African American chorus, neither Julia Bullock or Davone Tines have been cast to-date for the historic Metropolitan Opera production. "Fire Shut Up In My Bones" will be the first production with music and/or libretto by person or persons of African descent staged at the Metropolitan Opera. "Fire Shut Up In My Bones" music was composed by Terence Blanchard and the librettist is Kasi Lemmons.
