ABOUT THE COMPOSERS Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as the “woman who launched a thousand careers,” composer and arranger, Lena McLin’s storied musical legacy will be highlighted next month at Lincoln Center. After starting the McLin Opera Company in the 1950s, her artistic efforts were recognized by the Washington Afro-American for founding the “leading small opera company in the country.” Niece of the legendary father of modern gospel music, Thomas A. Dorsey, McLin was determined to carve her own musical path with her compositions and arrangements. Among her distinguished list of students who have championed her works are Mandy Patinkin, Kim English, Chaka Khan, Mark Rucker, Nicole Heaston, Tammy McCann and Robert Sims.
An internationally renowned composer, arranger, conductor, pianist, and “Dean” of choir directors, Roland Carter has become one the world’s beloved choral spiritual arrangers. He was taped to conduct the inaugural concert of the African American Music Series at Carnegie Hall. He is the founder and CEO of MAR-VEL, a publishing company specializing in African American musical traditions. As a distinguished scholar in his own right, Carter’s compositions and arrangements have been assembled in a collection, Our Musical Heritage jointly published by Carl Fischer Music and the National Association of Negro Musicians.
The equally renowned composer, arranger and vocal coach, Jacqueline Hairston, rounds out the distinguished trio of spiritual specialists. She too boasts a proud musical pedigree as the cousin of the great composer and actor Jester Hairston, who encouraged her musical ambitions. Hairston’s musical training at Juilliard, Howard University and Columbia prepared her to composers and arrange for some of the concert world’s brightest stars including Grace Bumbry, Denise Graves, William Warfield, Florence Quivar, and William Brown. She arranged several works for Kathleen Battle’s Metropolitan Opera Underground Railroad: A Spiritual Journey at Lincoln Center. Her compositions are published by Hal Leonard.
ABOUT THE PERFORMERS Performing the works of these distinguished composers and arrangers will be a star-studded group of musicians who have appeared at major opera houses and concert stages of the world. Artists include George Shirley, Marquita Lister, Cynthia Clarey, Chauncey Packer, Hope Briggs, Lucia Bradford, Kenneth Overton, Louise Toppin, Kevin Thompson, Shawnette Sulker, Cornelius Johnson, Alison Buchanan and Robert Sims. The accompanists will be Joseph Joubert, Byron Burford-Phearse and Paul Hamilton.
