Transylvania Times: Charlie Frost in organ music by African Americans Jan. 20, 3 PM

The Beulah McMinn Zachary Organ Foundation of Brevard First United Methodist Church (FUMC) will present organist Charlie Frost in recital on Sunday, Jan. 20, at 3 p.m. The concert is free. The public is invited.

The program is in commemoration of Martin Luther King weekend. Frost will be playing organ music composed or arranged by African-American composers, including David Hurd, Ulysses Kay, Calvin Taylor, Carl Haywood and Florence B. Price.

Frost is a native of Red Bank, N.J. He began his music studies at an early age. As a sophomore in high school, he began playing the organ and directing choirs in churches. He attended Westminster Choir College, Princeton, N.J., where he received both the Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in church music.

While a graduate student, Frost was the teaching assistant who taught all of the organ minors. His organ studies were with Dr. Joan Lippincott, former head of the organ department and world-renowned recitalist and recording artist. His conducting studies were with Dr. Joseph Flummerfelt, retired head of choral activities and director of the famed Westminster Choir.

Frost has served churches in New Jersey, New York, California, Washington and Michigan. He has appeared as an organ recitalist in many churches across the country. In addition, he serves as clinician for workshops and conferences.

Frost recently retired as minister of music at Sea Island Presbyterian Church, Beaufort, S.C. He was recently called out of retirement to serve as organist at First Presbyterian Church, Hilton Head, S.C. Frost also serves on the Board of Directors for the Beaufort Symphony Orchestra, as well as the keyboardist for the orchestra. He is also on the Board of Directors for the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra.
