Sinfo-Nia Youth Orchestra's 2018 Fall Concert : Tribute to Aretha Franklin - "Respect"
Greetings Family, Friends, and Colleagues,
How
are you and your family doing? I am writing to announce that
Sinfo-Nia Youth Orchestra will hold its Fall Concert on Sunday, October
21, 2018, 4:00 PM at the First Congregational Church Commons located at
125 Ellis St., Atlanta, GA 30303. Tickets are $15.00 for adult and
$10.00 for child. We are remembering The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin
- "RESPECT." Sinfo-Nia will perform some of her hit selections.
Please come out and enjoy an afternoon of classic soul. One of my
original compositions, "Kingdom Reign" will make its debut. Inspired by
the Panther movie and its Wakanda nation, this is an adventurous,
moving, powerful, majestic work.
Sinfo-Nia
is still accepting new students after this concert beginning Saturday,
October 27th. We are looking for string players on all levels -
beginning, intermediate, and advanced - violin, viola, cello, and double
bass. We are accepting advanced level only wind students (woodwinds,
brass, and percussion). We hold classes on Monday evenings 6:30 PM and
Saturday mornings 9 AM at First Congregational Church Commons located at
125 Ellis St., Atlanta, GA 30303. Parents that are interested in
enrolling their children can give us a call at (404) 328-0840. We will
give them information on the schedule, tuition, (including affordable
payment plans), performance opportunities, our history and travels,
famous people we have performed for and with, and so on. I have
attached a flier/poster to post on bulletin boards. You may make copies
to pass out to people. Also, You may forward this e-mail to family and
friends.
Please
consider making a donation (or monthly donations) to Sinfo-Nia Youth
Orchestra on our webpage. These donations that go towards Sinfo-Nia's
operating expenses such as special equipment (including some
instruments), performance trips, and other projects will be converted
and credited towards financial aid scholarships for those students
wishing to join whose family cannot afford it that come from no- and
low-income family households. They would be required to make both the
Saturday morning and Monday evening rehearsals and all of the scheduled
performances (everything at a minimum of 90%). They must have
transportation (by parent/guardian) and be able to obtain their uniform
items. They must have a willingness to practice at home on their own
regularly. Last, but not least, they must maintain a minimum of a 2.0
grade-point average with it improving each semester.
Another international trip is in the planning stages for 2020 - Haiti, Cuba, or Jamaica.
As
many of you, I am planning on retiring after this
school-year...retirement from the Dekalb County School System - 36
years, all in the Ronald E. McNair Cluster.
I
must share a story of my youngest daughter, Briana. She and a number
of string players traveled to Tuscaloosa, AL to play with the Tuscaloosa
Symphony Orchestra. They accompanied India Arie, Robin Thicke, Bo
Bice, LeAnn Rimes, Tony, Toni, Tone, the Temptations Revue, and others
in concert. One of my former Sinfo-Nia Stephen Lawrence who teaches at
North Atlanta High School was a part of that group as well. I shared
this news to my elementary school students and their parents to let them
know that these opportunities are a possibility if the students stick
with playing their instruments.
Honorees
were recognized for their individual contributions at “The Day of
Respect” honoring of unsung heroes by Vizion Dance this past Saturday,
October 13, 2018 at the Hammond House Museum. It was truly an honor
for me and Alycia to shine among these giants. I attached the poster
that honored us (yes, that's rapper, 50 Cent at the top RH corner and
Dr. C.T. Vivian in the middle).
Mrs. Naomi Barber King will receive distinguished recognition as an "Unsung Shero". Other honorees include:
