Music By Black Composers Announces Online Directory of Living Composers Compiled by Rachel Barton Pine Foundation

Music By Black Composers

Prof. Megan E. Hill writes:

I am thrilled to announce MBC’s latest resource, an online directory of living Black composers! You can check it out here.

This directory is an on-going work in progress, and so please let us know if you have additional information about any of the composers already listed there, or if you know of a composer whose name is currently not included but should be.

The directory is searchable by specific content, and sortable according to surname, geographic region, gender, and year of birth. It includes links to composers’ websites, when available, and to public contact information. We hope that it will be useful for those seeking to commission; performers, conductors, and concert programers seeking existing music; and other researchers and scholars.

Still to come in the coming months is MBC’s complete database of music by composers of African descent throughout history. Designed for use by students, teachers, performers, conductors, administrators, scholars, and librarians, it will be more extensive, containing facts about each composer and about individual pieces, information about where to find the music, links to recordings, program notes, and more. Stay tuned for news of its launch soon!

We hope that you spread the word of our new directory of living composers. And please be in touch with feedback and suggestions on how it might be improved or expanded!

Best wishes,

Megan Hill
