Nassau Music Society: Liam Teague presented two concerts that ranged from classical to jazz standards and calypso tunes

Tico Tico featuring Christine Gangelhoff on flute

Christine Gangelhoff forwards this release from The Nassau Music Society, Nassau, The Bahamas:

Liam Teague
16 March 2018 - St. Paul's, Lyford Cay
17 March 2018 - The Current: Baha Mar Art Studios

Liam Teague brought the house down - not once, but twice!

The inimitable Liam Teague presented two distinctly different concerts over the weekend with  programming that ranged from the classical repertoire and original compositions, to favourite jazz standards and catchy calypso tunes which brought everyone to their feet. Both concerts were interactive and instructive, and Teague's commanding performances and gracious character delighted the audiences from start to finish.

Arguably 'the best pan soloist in the world,' Teague demonstrated the versatility of the steel pan in a predominantly classical concert at St. Paul's.  Often associated with palm trees and sandy beaches, Teague's  virtuosic renditions of  Vivaldi and Paganini, accompanied by the masterful Paul Jones on piano, transformed the pan into a veritable concert instrument. The Lyford Cay International School's Steel Orchestra opened both halves of the concert at St Paul's, regaling the audience with  a creatively arranged and beautifully performed Guantanamera and a brilliant Bahamian Medley mash-up.

At The Current, where Teague was joined by Bahamian jazz giants Ralph Munnings, sax, Clinton Crawford, keys, Adrian D'Aguilar, bass, Kevin Dean, drums and Lamont Gibson, percussion and trumpet, the audience was treated to an exciting fusion of jazz and calypso.  His skillful command of the pan was apparent not only with his lightening fast technique but also his effortless improvisation and interpretation with a wide dynamic range.

Teague's generous nature was also on show.  Brandin Johnson, a music student at The University of the Bahamas, turned up to turn pages, had a conversation with Teague before the concert and then performed  an impromptu jazz piece with the pan master in the second half .  Our own Christine Gangelhoff, NMS Artistic Director, also graced the stage, joining Teague on flute both evenings for classic and jazz renditions of Tico Tico no Fuba.
