THIS YEAR, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH URBAN PLAYGROUND CHAMBER ORCHESTRA, WE
CELEBRATE THE COLLABORATION AND FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN BURLEIGH AND THE
AFRO-BRITISH COMPOSER SAMUEL COLERIDGE TAYLOR.
The friendship of these African American and Afro-British men provided
mutual support that inspired them to create works that embraced
underrepresented black musical and literary themes which shaped turn of
the 20th century culture. With a transatlantic approach, they were
active in the intellectual circles of their day, corresponding with
Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois. This concert invites listeners
to consider their production of western music, not outside, but within
the veil.

Dear Bill,
You are such an important supporter. Thank
you for this lovely post about our upcoming concert. I wish we could
have shared it with Dominique Rene de Lerma. Rehearsals have gone very
well. The music is beautiful and the musicians are representing
Coleridge-Taylor and Burleigh well.
