Saturday, June 10, at 7 p.m.

CHICAGO— The Civic Orchestra of Chicago, under the
direction of Michael Stern, performs a free community
concert in the auditorium at Kenwood Academy
High School (5015 S. Blackstone Ave., Chicago) on
Saturday, June 10, at 7 p.m.
Students of the
Kenwood Academy music department will perform
alongside Civic Orchestra musicians in a program
that includes Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3,
Op. 72b, and Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 in D Major,
Op. 43, as well as arrangements of works by Vivaldi,
Bach and Desmond.
The June 10 concert, which is free and open to the public,
is the culmination of a collaboration between the Civic
Orchestra and Kenwood Academy that began in April.
Inspired by CSO Judson and Joyce Green Creative
Consultant Yo-Yo Ma, the collaboration has included
side-by-side rehearsals, coaching sessions and
workshops between Civic musicians and Kenwood
students. Additionally, students from Kenwood Academy
will visit Symphony Center for an interactive Civic
Orchestra rehearsal with conductor Michael Stern on June
8, and Civic Orchestra musicians will visit Kenwood
Academy for a series of side-by-side pop-up chamber
performances throughout the school with Kenwood
student musicians on June 9. Following the pop-up
chamber performances, Ma and Stern will visit Kenwood
Academy to lead an interactive workshop for the
Kenwood music students. Activities on June 9 will
conclude with an assembly featuring performances by
the Kenwood Academy music department and the Civic
Orchestra.
Michael Stern serves as music director of the Kansas
City Symphony and as founding artistic director and
principal conductor of the IRIS Orchestra in
Germantown, Tenn. He has conducted major orchestras
in the United States, Europe and Asia including
the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic,
Cleveland Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra,
Philadelphia Orchestra, and London Symphony Orchestra.
The June 10 concert is free and open to the public, but
ticket reservations are required. Reservations can be
made by phone at 800‑223‑7114 or 312-294‑3000,
online at cso.org, or at the Symphony Center box office:
220 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60604.
Artists, programs and prices are subject to change.
This performance is presented in partnership with
Kenwood Academy High School. The Civic Orchestra of
Chicago is a program of the Negaunee Music Institute at
the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
