Hello Fine and Performing Arts Community,

Last night the Fine and Performing Arts Department hosted an opening reception for a Morgan Alumni Art Exhibition celebrating both the one hundred and fifty years of the Morgan State Univeristy and sixty-five years of the Visual Arts program at Morgan.  The title of the exhibition is Art and Academia: The History of the Visual Arts at Morgan State University.    

Please take a few moments to read the attached forward brilliantly written by our resident Art Historian, Dr. Lori Johnson, which over three pages, beautifully shares the history of the department, starting with Professor James E. Lewis’s vision for Art in the Liberal Arts environment and specifically at Morgan State University.  

This exhibition is a formidable collection of impressive works of art, always reflecting the spirit of the times (several decades) through very individual attempts of expression.  Works are presented from Morgan alumni from the very first students, as early as 1952 to more contemporary works from recent graduates.  The exhibit was mounted by Morgan faculty member Eric Briscoe.   

A very substantial catalogue was assembled to document this event.  I have scanned a few pages from this 42 page document to wet your appetite, principally assembled by Museum Registrar, Lance Moore. As chair, I would like to thank the efforts of Lori Johnson, Eric Briscoe, and Lance Moore for working together to assemble this very fine collection of Morgan masterpieces.

The dates of the exhibition are February 16 - March 23, 2017 at the James E. Lewis Museum at 2201 Argonne Drive, Baltimore, MD 21218.   If you enjoy great art, please take a moment to visit this exhibition, you will not be disappointed.
