Its London debut concerts were sell outs with audiences and
journalists falling over themselves to applaud the enormous energy and
commitment of their performances – welcome to Chineke!, founded by
double bassist Chi-chi Nwanoku MBE, an orchestra championing change and
Europe’s first professional orchestra made up entirely of black and
minority ethnic musicians.
We wanted something special and culturally exciting to celebrate St
George’s Day and we have it in this exhilarating concert. Not only does
it mark the orchestra’s Bristol debut but it sees it joined by a new
classical music star in the making, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason. Already
making colossal waves since winning the BBC Young Musician of the Year
competition, he brings his virtuoso flair and fresh approach to the
Haydn Cello Concerto in C.
The rest of the programme combines Mozart, Elgar and an operatic gem
from the Afro-French composer Chevalier de Saint-Georges. Acclaimed in
18th century Paris as ‘the most accomplished man in Europe’,
Saint-Georges was a spectacularly gifted violinist, fencer and composer
of music of such greatness that he became known as the Black Mozart.
