Radio 3 controller Alan Davey pledged to reappraise the station’s commissioning process at the inaugural Diversity and Inclusion in Classsical Composition Conference.
Speaking at the close of the event, which took place yesterday at the Royal Northern College of Music, Davey said that external representatives would join the commissioning board for the first time, rotating to ensure greater transparency and a wider range of perspectives.
He also announced that he would commission a new work for the Chineke! Orchestra to be broadcast on Radio 3. The work would be from a composer who has not previously been commissioned by the station, and would be chosen in consultation with Chi-chi Nwanoku MBE, the orchestra’s founder and artistic director, and the BBC commissioning board.
Davey said that Radio 3 would take the lead in expanding the perceived canon of composers, broadcasting more music by composers from BAME backgrounds and recording repertoire that is currently unavailable.

Finally, he committed to reconvening the conference in 12-18 months to ensure ongoing discussions and action.
