Paul O'Neal
ALEXANDRIA, VA - The
National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE),
National President Perry Tarrant released the following statement in
response to the fatal officer involved shooting of 18 year old Paul
O'Neal in Chicago:
"On Friday, August 5, the Independent Police Review Authority
released disturbing body camera footage of Chicago Police Department
(CPD) officers' pursuit and fatal shooting of 18 year old Paul O'Neal.
This is the latest in a spate of officer involved fatal shootings of
African-Americans. Our organization has a stated mission of the
administration of equitable justice in every community in America.
Additionally, we are committed to being the conscience of law
enforcement and the nation.
"NOBLE applauds the swift action by CPD Superintendent Eddie
Johnson to relieve the 3 officers of their police powers. Additionally,
we acknowledge the fact that Friday's video was released
within the new 60 day policy of the Chicago Police Department. However,
we are concerned about the tactics deployed in pursuing and later
subduing Mr. O'Neil resulting in his death.
"This event reinforces the significant
work ahead of us as we work to build bridges of understanding between
our communities and law enforcement. Critical review of incidents such
as this is imperative in order to build upon transparency and trust.
"NOBLE will look to increase its efforts to support our
Chicago Chapter for their award-winning work in the local school system
in delivering our national program, The Law and Your Community. Through
this program, young people improve their communications and
interactions with law enforcement officers and their understanding of
their federal, state and local laws." [END]
