CINCINNATI,
OH – A panel of judges and experts will lead the NAACP membership in
discussions on how courts can change systemic racial inequality in
America at the annual convention’s final plenary session.
The
discussion, titled “Perspectives on the Role of the Courts in the
Continuing Quest for Equality” takes place during the Final Plenary
Session of the four-day convention in Cincinnati beginning at 9:30 a.m.
on Wednesday.
Panel
participants will include Judge Kentanji Brown Jackson, U.S. District
judge from Washington, D.C., Judge Nathaniel R. Jones, retired Appellate
Judge from Youngstown, Ohio who served as general counsel for the NAACP
from 1969 to 1979, and Elaine R. Jones, former President and
Director-Counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. The discussion will
be moderated by Professor Spencer Overton, president of the Joint Center
for Political and Economic Studies in Washington, D.C.
During
the convention, leaders for the civil rights organization announced
plans to work with law enforcement and criminal justice officials to
increase oversight and accountability between police and communities of
color as part of their advocacy for better schools, economic
opportunity, environmental policy, youth engagement and voter
mobilization in the Nov. 8 election.
Later
Wednesday, NAACP leaders will award Judge Jones the 101st Spingarn
Medal from the organization for his lifetime of achievement in advancing
civil rights at a dinner in his honor beginning at 7:30 p.m.
