South Shore Opera Company of Chicago: Sun. Feb. 28, 2016 4 PM, Still, Coleridge-Taylor, Perkinson, Carter, Ellington, Strayhorn: Annual Black History Concert, Free

About the February 28 2016 South Shore Opera Black History Month Concert
Music expresses a culture in different ways. Celebrate the end of Black History Month in a concert featuring the music of Black composers’ classical arrangements of a powerful form of music that carried a race of people from slavery to emancipation…the Negro Spirituals. These songs contributed to the birth of jazz, and to the uplift of outstanding Black singers and musicians. Our opera community is historically linked to the promotion of these artists. Featured in the program are classical compositions of William Grant Still’s Here’s
One and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Deep River; and music of Ellington and Strayhorn and additional music by these composers, John Carter, and Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson— in performance by Chicago’s acclaimed soprano Joelle Lamarreled by classical violinist, James Sanders with pianist, Donald Neale and bassist, Christian Dillingham.
