African American Composer Initiative News

Thank you to all of you who attended one of our sold-out concerts last month! It was a joy to have you join us for a vibrant celebration of the remarkable Dr. Valerie Capers - from the surprise Fanfare for an Uncommon Woman to the inspirational Freedom Song - Keep Your Eyes on the Prize, enlivened  by YOUR participation!

We thank you for your continuing support of Eastside College Preparatory School through these concerts. This year we all celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the school's founding and invite you to view this video chronicling their inspirational story.

We are very excited to announce the release of our first CD, a milestone in the fulfillment of our goal of bringing to light the music of outstanding African American composers.  This collection of piano music was written by Zenobia Powell Perry, performed by Josephine Gandolfi, LaDoris Cordell, and Deanne Tucker and recorded at Stanford University by Mark Dalrymple. Produced by Jeannie Pool, it can be ordered from Amazon here.
Included on the CD are pieces for solo piano and a suite of four-hand works arranged from orchestral movements in her opera Tawawa House, an opera of epic proportions, musical beauty, and great historical significance.  To learn more about this gifted, accomplished composer, go to http://zenobiapowellperry.org/  Pianists of all levels and teachers take note:  sheet music for the piano pieces heard on the recording is available through this website.
We hope that many of you will soon be listening to and playing this music yourselves

Dear Mr. Zick,
I want to thank you for including news of AACI
concerts and events on your excellent website
over the years and for this most recent post
about our Zenobia Powell Perry CD. I have
greatly admired and enjoyed your website for
some time now, but don't believe I've ever
written to you to thank you for your wonderful
 contribution to others in disseminating
information about the fantastic heritage of
music by African American composers.
With great appreciation,

Jodi Gandolfi
