A new documentary film about the life and music of Little Rock native Florence B. Price will have its broadcast premiere on AETN at 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16. The following day a live screening of the film including a Q & A with the filmmakers will be held at the Fayetteville Public Library at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, in the Walker Community Room.
Price made music history as the first African-American woman whose music was performed by major symphony orchestras in the 1930's. She also collaborated with important figures including W.E.B. DuBois, Langston Hughes, and vocalist Marian Anderson. Running throughout are performances of Price's beautiful music performed by University of Arkansas faculty and students, as well as leading performers from across the U.S. The film also relies heavily on recently discovered musical scores, documents and photos of Price that were obtained in recent years by the U of A Special Collections library.
The film was written and edited by UA music professor emeritus James Greeson with UA journalism professor Dale Carpenter as the associate producer and lead videographer. Other UA faculty involved in the project were history professor Calvin White, journalism professors Gerald Jordan and Hayot Tuychiev, and musicology professor emerita Barbara Jackson. UA music faculty Robert Mueller, and Er-Gene Kahng and students Amanda Brooks, Taz Anderson and Charles Robinson Jr. are also seen and heard in the course of the documentary.
The film was funded by major grants from the Arkansas Humanities Council. The film is distributed by the University of Arkansas Press.
