Mezzo Soprano Denyce Graves sang the title role in the 2005 premiere of the opera MARGARET GARNER with libretto by Toni Morrison. The opera is loosely based on actual events in the life of runaway slave Margaret Garner. Margaret kills her two children to prevent them being returned to slavery. 
MusicUNTOLD selected Denyce Graves to sing a recital  to celebrate Juneteenth and the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War in 2011 at Long Beach Performing Arts Center in Long Beach, Ca. The MusicUNTOLD Chorale opened the program with Ulysses Kay 'A Lincoln Letter' and Rosephanye Powell 'I Dream A World' from Langston Hughes poem.
MusicUNTOLD has scheduled a Free FREEDOM CONCERT to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of END of CIVIL WAR and 13th Amendment to ABOLISH SLAVERY on May 24, 2014, Hall of Liberty-Hollywood Forest Lawn with preconcert lecture 6:00PM and 7:00PM Concert. 
The concert celebration will include Baritone Michael Paul Smith singing the aria, Many Colors, from Ulysses Kay opera FREDERICK DOUGLASS and Soprano Sheila Yvette Judson singing the aria, I am Moses the Liberator, from Nkeiru Okoye opera HARRIET TUBMAN: When I Cross That Line To Freedom. Pianist Polli Chambers-Salizar will accompany both singers.
MusicUNTOLD is dedicated to arts and educational program that promote diversity and human dignity. The Free FREEDOM CONCERT of May 24, 2015 is sponsored in part by Employee Community Fund of the Boeing Company, Colburn Foundation, and Rainey/Pierson Property Management.
