CBMR announces a new blog series, “Depth Sounding,” a platform for short-form scholarship that spans the music—sound continuum of the African diaspora.

The Center for Black Music Research is proud to announce a new blog series, “Depth Sounding,” a platform for short-form scholarship that spans the music—sound continuum of the African diaspora. The essays in this series are intended for a wide audience, including the educated public as well as non-specialist academics. We welcome contributions on any aspects of black sound and/or music, including: histories, from local to global sketches of emerging practices and genres reviews of new works of art and scholarship interviews with artists and scholars cultural and urban soundscapes archival research and studies critical essays, cultural commentary, and personal histories “Depth Sounding” seeks to be a space for up-to- the-minute thought and one in which authors can experiment with format, media, content, argument construction, etc. in ways that privilege or more fully integrate sound. Contributions or proposal ideas may be submitted to cbmrblog@colum.edu. During the course of its creation and installation, FREE/PHASE, a public sound installation commissioned by the CBMR of media artists Mendi and Keith Obadike, will be a central blog focus. Proposals exploring that project’s themes (freedom and black music broadly) will be especially welcome. Submissions should follow the guidelines in the CBMR Style Guide.
