Aaron
Dworkin, founder and president of the Sphinx Organization, has been
named dean of the University of Michigan's School of Music, Theater
& Dance for five years, starting in July. He succeeds Christopher
Kendall, in the job for a decade, the university limit. Kendall will
continue in the Department of Conducting.
In
his new post, Dworkin moves from an organization with a budget of $4.6
million and faculty and staff of 40 to one with a budget of $44 million,
an endowment of $140 million, and more than 200 faculty and staff. He
will be the school's first African-American dean. His appointment
includes a tenured professorship in the college.
The
Detroit-based Sphinx organization trains student string players of
Black and Latino origin and helps to promote them through various
competitions and tours. He will be succeeded there by his wife, Afa S.
Dworkin, currently the school's executive and artistic director. She
joined Sphinx in 1999 as artistic director and VP of programming.
