Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra 70th season MLK Day Concert on January
17, 2015 at SGI Auditorium in Santa Monica sponsored by Santa Monica
Westside Coalition was an overwhelming success to a capacity audience.
Maestro Guido Lamell began the program with Afro-British composer Samuel
Coleridge-Taylor 'Ballade in A minor' (probably a Los Angeles premiere).
Soloist Niki J Crawford, and orchestra delivered a penetrating version
of 'Precious Lord, Take My Hand'. Niki and the Santa Monica
Symphony shared a traditional version of 'There is a Balm in Gilead'
before the smooth addition of Ward AME Church Choir, with an added
gospel rhythm section, for an audience exciting uninterrupted different
version. The first half concluded with soloist Niki, orchestra, and
church choir performing a spirited version of 'Lift Every Voice and
Sing' arranged by Roland Carter.
Santa Monica Symphony
returned in the second half to hold the audience in
meditation during four movements of Symphony No. 8 in G major by Antonin
Dvorak. The concert concluded with the return of Niki, Ward AME Church
Choir and Santa Monica Orchestra performing traditional 'We Shall
Overcome, sing-along with audience participation.
