THE SPINGARN MEDAL was instituted in 1914 by the late J.E. Spingarn (then Chairman of the NAACP Board of Directors), who gave annually until his death in 1939, a gold medal to be awarded for the highest or noblest achievement by an American Negro during the preceding year or years. 

Educator, pianist, first African American Pulitzer Prize Winner in  Music, and most distinguished living American classical music composers, George Walker, is most deserving of the next THE SPINGARN MEDAL. RECOMMENDATION FOR THE AWARD
Recommendations should be submitted in writing to The Spingarn Medal Committee, Attention: Mildred B. Roxborough 1095 Avenue of the Americas, Suite 24D, New York, NY 10036 on or before December 31st of each year for the following year's consideration.
