Melodic Conch Salad, a new CD by MUIN242, a
group of students at the College of the Bahamas:
Bahamian conch salad is the delicious combination of
the native conch with other ingredients of varying
flavour and texture: the sweetness of tomatoes, the
crunch of peppers, the zest of onion, the tang of limes.
Melodic Conch Salad takes both its name and its
concept from this beloved classic Bahamian dish.
Melodic Conch Salad is a fusion of Bahamian music
with other styles and genres, creating a colourful,
synchronized, tasty, spicy, sweet work that appeals to
the varied tastes of every listener. By combining
elements from a wide array of musical styles -
traditional Bahamian rake 'n’ scrape, classical, and jazz
- along with African and Latin influences and
contemporary social commentary, members of MUIN
242 created unique versions of popular Bahamian folk
songs, as well as an original composition named C.O.B.,
after the College of the Bahamas, the group’s alma
mater.
The ensemble MUIN242 is a diverse group of musicians
who share a love for Bahamian culture. The group’s
actual name is taken from COB curriculum (MUIN) and
the Nassau area code (242). They want to share their
unique interpretation of Bahamian music with the world.
Members first came together in 2013 as part of COB's
music group performance class, playing piano, soprano
saxophone, tenor saxophone, bass guitar and drums. For
a group performance, they selected the repertoire,
created the arrangements, and rehearsed the program,
but ultimately decided that one performance was not a
sufficient showcase for the music. This led to the idea of
recording an album. Melodic Conch Salad presents MUIN
242 with an opportunity to record both instrumentals and
vocals of Bahamian music in a unique instrumentation
specifically arranged for the ensemble. Their main goal is
to highlight the diversity of songs and composers in The
Bahamas and to add their own “twist” to each song. MUIN
242 hopes to raise awareness of and to promote
Bahamian music, and to encourage younger Bahamians
to appreciate the beauty and complexity of Bahamian
music. The ensemble also hopes that its performance will
bring attention to the high level of excellence in education
and performance taking place at The College of The
Bahamas Music Department. Ensemble members Lynden
Sands, Matthew Rolle II, Gillard Louis, Elvin Hanna, Leslie
Forbes and Reubandero Gibson are all students of The
College of the Bahamas.
