William Grant Still Arts Center Tribute, 2-4 PM May 10, Celebrates Birthday of Composer, Oboist & Conductor William Grant Still (1895-1978), Born May 11

Intersections South LA on Birthday Tribute to William Grant Still:

The concert will feature rarely performed compositions and will be held at The William Grant Still Arts Center, the Department of Cultural Affairs Community Arts Facility founded in 1977 and named in Dr. Still’s honor.
The performance by Mark Broyard (vocals) and Aeros Pierce (piano) will cover the music and arrangements of Dr. Still. The moving and provocative “I Dream a World” excerpted from his opera Troubled Island, with words by Langston Hughes, will open the concert. Three “art song” selections from Dr. Still’s Songs of Separation Song Cycle including “Parted” (words by Paul Lawrence Dunbar) and “If You Should Go” (words by Countee Cullen), as well as other compositions, will be performed. Special guest Daniel Corral will join on accordion for Still’s innovative reworking of the spiritual “Here’s One.”
The concert program will be held from 2-4pm at the William Grant Still Arts Center, 2520 S. West View Street, Los Angeles, 90016. Birthday cake will be served following the concert.
