American Intimates: Music for Private Pleasure features American music intended for performance by home amateurs or broadcast in the early days of radio. In addition to 4-hand piano duos, contemplative character pieces for the antique American reed organ, and African-American composer William Grant Still's song cycle, “From the Hearts of Women”, MELODEON presents a number of songs and piano pieces by Dana Suesse, who was called “The Girl Gershwin”.  Like Gershwin, Suesse wrote successful music that bridged the divide between pop and classical culture, but she dropped out of public awareness after the Second World War. A folio of her music was just re-published by Dover Press.

Arthur Bird (1856-1923): for the American Reed Organ: Op. 44: Waltzer • Gavotte: Op. 45: Skizzen 1 and 3

William Grant Still (1895-1978): From the Hearts of Women • Summerland • Scherzo from African-American Symphony

Dana Suesse (1909-1987): My Silent Love/Jazz Nocturne • Midnight in Gramercy Square • Danza a Media Noche • Scherzette • The Night is Young and You Are Beautiful • Swampbird • Yours for a Song • Serenade to a Skyscraper

Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869): La Bananier • Réponds Moi
