The Charleston Symphony Orchestra (CSO) Gospel Choir is pleased to present a concert theme honoring Sadie Green Oglesby, local African-American television pioneer, Saturday, May 24, 2014, 5:00pm at Emanuel AME Church, 110 Calhoun Street, downtown Charleston as part of the 2014 Piccolo Spoleto opening weekend.
This performance will honor the life and legacy of Ms. Sarah
"Sadie" Green Oglesby, educator and television innovator who became the
first black person to host a television program in Charleston with WCSC Live-5 News (CBS affiliate). She inspired many academic achievers during her teaching years at Avery and Burke High Schools.
Attaining legendary status in the education community as a
superb English and Latin teacher, she was hand-picked by television
giant John Rivers, Sr., founder of WCSC-TV, the first television station
in Charleston, in 1953. WSCS-TV remains the oldest continuous
television station in the state of South Carolina.
Ms. Oglesby attended Avery Institute in Charleston and
graduated in 1918. She received her B.A. in Classics from Fisk
University in Tennessee and her master's degree from New York
University. She taught both at Avery Institute and Allen University,
and finally at Burke High School (formerly known as Colored Industrial
School), where she taught English and Latin as well as drama coaching.

About the CSO Gospel Choir
Now in its fourteen year, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra
(CSO) Gospel Choir, Charleston’s celebrated culturally diverse choir,
performs gospel, spirituals and sacred music for annual events including
a Palm Sunday performance, CSO Gospel Christmas, Piccolo Spoleto and
regional events throughout the southeast and numerous engagements in Europe including Paris, London, Rome and Prague. The Choir also visited Ghana, West Africa in 2012. CSOGospel.com
About Music Director Candace B. McLeod
Candace Burroughs McLeod’s musical journey is deeply rooted
in classical, contemporary, and gospel-style piano, but her passion is
choral excellence. A graduate of Spelman College in Atlanta, she earned a
BA in Music. She also completed further graduate studies at Coastal
Carolina University, Limestone College, College of Charleston, The
Citadel, and Charleston Southern University. During her years at Spelman
College, Mrs. McLeod had the privilege of singing at the pregame show
of the 1994 Super Bowl game with Natalie Cole, the 1996 Olympic Chorus
for its Opening Ceremony, and with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra under
the direction of Robert Shaw and Yoel Levi in a benefit concert with Ray
Charles. She was selected as 2006 Teacher of the Year at
Flowertown Elementary School and is currently a piano teacher at Fort
Dorchester High School and private piano and voice instructor. Mrs.
McLeod is affiliated with the National Association for Music Education
(NAFME), the South Carolina Music Educators Association (SCMEA), the
South Carolina Education Association (SCEA), Zeta Phi Beta Sorority,
Inc., Sigma Alpha Iota International and Professional Music Fraternity
for Women.
