Folks:
For
those who see me on Facebook, you already received an invite from me,
and if you are or are not in the Newburgh area this Friday, spread the
word and share the attached flyer with your friends or colleagues who
live nearby.
But
for those who are not on the social network, please pass the news down
that the SUNY Orange Symphonic Band is presenting the first of three
concerts devoted to the legacy of African-American composers who have
written for concert band, brass ensemble and organ. The first concert,
entitled "From the South: The Folk and Spiritual Sounds of
African-American Traditions" will feature the first New York performance
of O'Neal Douglas' Harriet, a symphony in three movements
depicting the legacy of the noted abolitionist, and the first
performance of William Grant Still's Kaintuck' in an
arrangement for piano and wind symphony created by noted
composer-conductor Dana Paul Perna, with Leon Hilfstein as soloist.
The remainder of the program consists of Cedric Adderley's Indigo Run, Ayatey Shabazz's arrangement of Let Us Break Bread Together and two works by William Owens: And My Spirit Lives On and The Southern Dawn.
If
you're unable to make this concert, which is on Friday evening, March
21st at 7:00 p.m., do not fret, for there are two more concerts on March
30th at Grace Episcopal Church in Middletown, and on May 17th at the
Paramount Theatre, also in Middletown.
