week’s Cedille Chicago Presents (on 98.7 FM WFMT in Chicago and
wfmt.com everywhere, Wednesday nights, 10 pm Central time) features the
Chicago Sinfonietta and its pioneering founding Music Director, Maestro
Paul Freeman, with selections from all 6 of the orchestra’s Cedille
albums.
Under the visionary leadership of Maestro Freeman, the Chicago
Sinfonietta, founded in 1987, quickly established itself as the nation’s
most diverse orchestra, not only in its personnel, but also in its
programming.
A prime example is the group’s 3-volume set of Cedille
recordings titled African Heritage Symphonic Series. This
week’s free download comes from Volume I of the series, making that our
CD of the Week (25% off the regular price, this week only). The
selection, aptly titled “Nostalgia,” is the 2nd movement of Nigerian
composer Fela Sowande’s 1930 African Suite.
